Shipton Bellinger Millenium Tennis Ladder

Starting on 22 April 2000

Final at the Millenium Party on 8 July 2000

How it Works

Anybody is welcome to participate whatever the standard. The idea is to have some fun and enjoy our courts!

We have decided to start with a Singles Ladder. However if there is a demand for mixed Doubles, over 60's or under 16's, we should be delighted to set this in motion providing there are at least six participants in any one category.

The initial ladder will be in the order in which people joined in.

Action Steps

Please call Edward and Lucia Grimshaw (842276) to have your name on the ladder. We will then send you 'How it works' and the names and numbers of those participating.

Participants organise the matches themselves using the telephone listings given at the time of registration and subsequently on the tennis notice board at the courts.

When the matches are played please phone the results to Edward and Lucia Grimshaw on 842276. The list will be updated on Mondays and put on the tennis notice board.

Players are to provide their own balls.

Challenges

Challenges may be issued to any player on the ladder.

Only challenges made between players who are within 4 places of each other will count towards a change position on the ladder.

If the challenger wins, they move to the position of the beaten opponent, causing the opponent and all those below him/her to move down one position.

If the opponent defeats a challenge, then they move up one position.

If a player challenges a lower placed opponent on the ladder (within 4 places) and loses, then the opponent moves to the position of the challenger with any others affected moving down one position.

The number one position can only be attained by beating the number one player!

Matches.

The final play-off for this position will be at the Millenium Party on 8 July @ 2pm. There will be a tennis Cup for the winner.

All matches shall be the first to win 8 games. In the event of reaching 7-7, a tie-break should be played. See end of page for how a tie-break is played.

At the end of a session if a match is unfinished, the leading player at the time will be deemed to be the winner. If the score is level, then no change will take place on the ladder.

Resting and Demotions

Players who do not respond to a challenge within seven days are deemed to have lost the match.

Players who do not play at least one match in a calendar month will be moved down 4 places. An updated list of who has and hasn't played will be kept at The Old Vicarage.

Any player wishing to join the ladder will start at the bottom.

Recording Results

All results must be telephoned to Edward and Lucia Grimshaw tel : 842276 after each match. If we are not there please leave a message.

The ladder will be updated weekly and the list changed on Mondays.

How a Tie-Break is played.

  1. The winner is the first player, or pair, to win seven points, providing they lead by a margin of two points. If the score reaches 6-6 the game is extended until the margin is achieved.
  2. The player, whose turn it is to serve, serves the first point only. The opponent then serves the second and third points and thereafter each player serves alternately for two consecutive points until the winner has been decided. In doubles use the same order for serving as had existed in the set leading up to the tie-break.
  3. From the first point, each point shall be served alternately from the right and left courts, staring from the right. An easy way to remember is that if the score is even i.e. 0-0, 2-0, 2-4 etc. then the serve is from the right. If the score is odd i.e. 0-1, 4-3, 8-7, then the serve is from the left. If play occurs from the wrong side then the mistake is rectified straight away, but the result of that play shall stand.
  4. Players shall change ends after every six points and at the conclusion of the tie-break.
  5. The player, or pair in doubles, who served first in the tie-break shall receive in the first game of the following set.

The organisers reserve the right to change or add to the rules in the interest of common sense. A weeks notice will be given.
