I have to report that our request for a Millennium Grant has been unsuccessful. I will be making another application which will take a couple of months.
Many of you have been asking - when are we going to start - well like anything worth doing - it will require money. I requested £4,500 - with significant help it can probably be achieved for £3,500. I am prepared to support the project with a donation of £500. Please come forward either publicly or privately with offers of support - money obviously - say £1 per brick - we need 1500 of them and physical offers to dig holes - mix concrete - lay bricks - anyone who can supply materials at cost.
I will arrange for diagrams of the columns to be displayed on the Village notice boards - meanwhile please contact me with any offers of help or donations at THAIR HOUSE, HIGH STREET.

[Ed: We are keeping track of the status of the columns on the website. Further despatches will be stored in the Millenium Column Fundraising despatch area.]

The afternoon was very successful, despite the winter-like weather! Villagers turned out to enjoy line dancing, barn dancing and various sporting events, watch the Junior Bellinger Players and comedy magic and look at the village's internet site.
It was wonderful to see so many people from the village working together to make the day, a day to remember, and it was certainly very much appreciated. A big thank you to everyone who got involved and for turning out to support the event. We hope you enjoyed yourselves.
Following the event, we received very good press coverage in Amesbury Journal & the Andover Advertiser.
Photographs of the Party will be on sale at the Horticultural Show in September. If you would like to see them before that call 847985. These were taken by Peter Beadle.
The winning ticket for the lucky millennium leaflet was 396. These were the yellow leaflets inside the JANUARY edition of Shipton Bellinger Newsletter. The prize is a lovely hamper. If your leaflet has this number printed on it call Pam on 842011 to collect your prize.

Full training will be given and equipment provided. Come and try a healthy way to keep fit whilst benefiting the village. Telephone numbers to contact Parish Council are on the noticeboard.
We are very grateful to the History Society for their kind gift of funds to maintain the website and to continue recording the history of our village. We are very keen to take up this mantle and wish to do this in three ways :
A pictorial history of the Village in the year 2000. All of us view with great interest the old pictures of the Village that are in the Village Centre and The Boot and in years to come people will want to look back and see what the Village was like today. We plan to take a number of photographs of the Village streets, buildings, views, so as to record how the place that we live looked at the turn of the Millennium. Please let us know what pictures you think should be included.
Extending the history to cover the last 15 years or so since the original Village History was produced. What events or changes have occurred in the village that you think should be recorded? What houses have been built or knocked down? How was the village effected by the great storms of 1987? What shops have closed and how has the village economy changed? There are many aspects of Village life that we can record. If you have any recollections, stories, anecdotes or pictures of the Village in the last 15 years please contact us.
Add additional information to the history section that is already on the site. Are there items of Village history that were not in the original booklet that you feel could have been? Can you provide any more details about points that were raised? Because of the large amount of space available on the site (a luxury not available to the original producers of the Village history booklet) we are keen to build upon the great work that has already been undertaken. If you wish to help please let us know.
The site itself continues to develop and has now been registered with a number of the main search engines to make it easier to find. Alta Vista, Excite, Lycos and Yahoo should all list the village site when you type Shipton Bellinger and hit search. We have also registered the site with some Australian engines because of the village connections with down under.
Are you tired of typing in the URL above to access the site ? Well the good news is that we have also registered two domain names for the village. They are :
http://www.shiptonbellinger.org.uk
and
http://www.shiptonbellinger.net.
Type in either of these and they will automatically divert to the main index page on the site. You cant get much easier than that! We've also reserved www.shiptonbellinger.com specially for future use within the village.[Ed: But I guess you know that if you're reading this online!]
The site has had over 520 hits or visits since we launched and so is an ideal way to promote your organisation with an entry on the clubs and societies page. You could also use the site to promote any events that you may be organising through the Whats On pages. Details on how to create a page are on the site or you could e-mail us or give us a call, we are more than happy to help.

Roy Price and his wife Eve were invited to a very special gathering at Aethelhamstead House in Dorset. Roy was the guest of honour at a blood donors award ceremony. He received a certificate and a cut glass chalice for donating 100 pints of blood since 1965. 35 people from Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset gained awards, most had given 50 pints, 3 had given 75 but the top award went to our Roy with 100 pints. Well done to our three counties champion.
There is a shortage of volunteers for this life saving service. If you want to join Roy in saving lives, a new centre is opening in September at the British Legion Club in Tidworth. Look out for more information or ask Roy at the Village Centre where he is the caretaker.

The main debate at the July meeting was about the traffic problems in the village. Pat Pierce, our HCC councillor, was at the meeting and the Parish Council made good use of his expertise. At his suggestion HCC Traffic Management Team have been invited to view the problems of the village. Concerns have been crystallised into the following areas: -
Trouble at the Beech Tree. For longer than most of us can remember the Beech Tree at the top of Parkhouse Road has been a focus of village life. Children have always played there and many villagers have fond memories of this tree. It is very sad that the present generation of children have gone a long way to spoiling this landmark. Trees have been cut down, neighbouring householders have been verbally abused and their property damaged whilst part of the neighbouring field has been made useless for crops due to vandalism and litter.
PARENTS DO YOU KNOW THAT CHILDREN WITH AXES AND OTHER DANGEROUS TOOLS VANDALISE THIS BIT OF WOODLAND.
Nobody wants to stop children playing at the Beech Tree but could we have a bit of moderation so that future generations can appreciate this area. The Police are aware of the problem but it is you, the parents that can make the real difference.
Pam Ball, Chairman
Well done to our Junior members for their contribution to the Millennium Party on 8th July. Thanks also to Tim Bancroft for stepping in it to direct and to anyone else who helped and supported us when we needed them. The Passing of Cleverclogs by Maureen Neild proved to be a very intriguing play. A second performance will be shown on Saturday 4th November at the Village Centre when we will present an evening of one-act plays. Our next Pantomime will be presented in February 2001, so please make a note of these dates now.
After a summer break to recharge our batteries we will meet as usual from Tuesday 5th September. To enable us to continue entertaining you in the future we urgently need new members, especially adults. We have lost a number of key people over recent years, which limits what we can do. If you want to become involved in any way, please come along and join us - we need anyone, on and off the stage!
If you would like to know more about our Club or feel you could get involved, then please dont hesitate to ring me on 01980 846341 or just call at the Village Centre on Tuesday evenings from 7.45 p.m. You may be assured of a friendly welcome and a cuppa!

We extend sincere sympathy to the families of:
Thomas John Legg died on 8th August, aged 80
Lenny Sheen, died on 14th August, aged 55
Edith Judge died on 16th August, aged 86 .
Please may I, through the Village Newsletter, say a big thankyou to all our friends in Shipton Bellinger for the wonderful support given to Len during his last illness. I know he was very heartened by the visits to Farley Ward by so many of you, and the cards and flowers. Your telephone enquiries for his well being brightened many of his days. Subsequently on his arrival home all the good wishes continued to pour in, and although his power of communication was somewhat impaired I know he so enjoyed the visits by all who came.
Thankyou too for all the wonderful kindness you have shown me since Len died. I honestly dont know how Id have got through the past weeks without the love, friendship and support from so many. Its certainly good to feel we live in a village with such a caring attitude.
On behalf of Farley Ward may I also say thankyou for all the donations sent in Lens memory. Over five hundred pounds have been received and Im assured by the ward staff that it was very much appreciated.
With the aid of a magnificent grant from the Fete Committee, one of the Parochial Church Councils Millennium projects is to try and complete records of the incumbents of this parish from earliest times. The plan is to erect properly painted boards in the Church giving as many details as possible.
We have a draft list of names from 1665 to the present day.
If anyone has any information at all about the Rectors of this parish or any other interesting local information for the period 1000 to 1700, will they very kindly get in touch with the PCC Secretary, Robin Hiscocks, Lorne Cottage, High Street, Shipton Bellinger, Tidworth, Hants.
