VILLAGE FETE

SATURDAY 10 JUNE

1.30 - 4.30pm

Playing field

Editorial

Thank you to the half a dozen people (two of whom are very new residents in the village) for their help with the Village Clean Up on 25th March. This small number of people meant the areas covered had to be restricted, but even so a considerable amount of rubbish was collected. They all made a valuable contribution to the annual effort to smarten up our village.

It is proposed for next years Clean Up to be held in the afternoon rather than the morning, and hopefully more people will support it.

How good it would be if "Joe Public" was reformed and litter was deposited in the appropriate bins etc or taken to the Andover Tip . WS

Everyone welcome!

200 Club

We have often welcomed new members with a win in their first few months but never with 2 wins. Then, to win the top prize the following month! What a player! If you would like to join the 200 Club and try your luck, please ring John Flowers on 01980 846263

[Note the names and addresses have been removed.]

Shipton Bellinger Youth F C Under 9, U11 & U13’s

We are pleased to announce that the Under 11’s and Under 13’s have succeeded in reaching the finals in their respective cups. The boys would like to invite any supporters to WHITCHURCH on 13/5/00 to support them. The Under 9’s will have played their semi-final on 29/4/00 and we hope that they will be joining us on Finals Day. For further details contact J Neville 01980 842692

Congratulations go to all our boys in the 3 teams who have represented the village - they have been a credit to us.

On a sadder note - the new pavilion in the school grounds is for our younger members to change and keep all their equipment in. It has now been vandalised three times (including a break in) in the short time it has been there. As a club that runs on a shoestring we cannot afford to keep maintaining damage that has been caused by others. If anyone has any information regarding this (however small) please CONTACT THE LOCAL POLICE.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

SHIPTON IS NOT A PREFERRED SITE FOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. Thanks to your contributions to the petition, letters to TVBC and advice to the Parish Council, the message got to TVBC that the site in Shipton wasn’t suitable for this round of development. Our TVBC Councillor Andrew Baxter was very helpful in forcefully representing the views of the majority of the village. It was a close run decision but we can relax for the moment.

Don’t forget the PARISH COUNCIL AGM on MONDAY 8TH MAY 8PM at the VILLAGE CENTRE.

BELLINGER PLAYERS

Thank you to everyone who supported our Murder Mystery Evening on 1st April. We were amazed that, for the first time ever, tickets were sold out two weeks before and a reserve list was made. The layout was re-arranged to accommodate over 100 audience. We are indebted to Tim Bancroft for scripting and directing "Mucked up McTupps", especially as he was sent to work abroad two weeks before the event! We are very grateful to Julie and Peter Donovan who stepped in at the last minute to paint the backdrop. Julie also did the make-up on the night. Well done to those members who made their first stage debut, as well as the rest of the cast for pulling together and to everyone who helped behind the scenes. We all enjoyed an excellent two course hot supper provided by Bob and Carole Goratschow. I am sure you will all agree that the evening was very good value for money!

We are unable to participate in this year's Cricklade Drama Festival as they have too many entries. [Ed: We were asked to join in again about a week before the festival when another group dropped out! It was too late by then, though!] This was particularly disappointing for the Juniors who had chosen and cast their play under the leadership of Jeannette Moyse. We have to say "au revoir" to Jeannette who is moving out of the village and our grateful thanks go to her for being such an enthusiastic member and for her hard work with the Juniors, who will miss her.

The Juniors will continue rehearsing a one-act play called "The Passing of Cleverclogs", to be shown during the Millennium Party on Saturday 8th July, so do come and see them in action! We hope to repeat this play in the Autumn when we plan to show an evening of one-act plays on a Saturday in October. It looks as if we will present our annual Panto in January/February 2001 – dates will be confirmed.

Sadly, we are soon to lose another long-standing member of the Club. Tom Jennings has been a member, past Chairman and Committee member since the early days of the Club and will long be remembered for the many roles and disguises he has undertaken, as well as the practical help he has given in providing props and sets. He put a lot of time and effort into fitting out our overstage storage area. Thank you Tom for being so dependable and we wish Vi and yourself a long and happy retirement. Shipton won't be the same without you! We will be arranging a "farewell do" in May, to which all friends and families will be invited. Please let me know if you wish to be included on our guest list.

If you would like to know more about our Club or feel you could get involved, then please don’t hesitate to ring me on 01980 846341 or just call at the Village Centre on Tuesday evenings from 7.45 p.m. You may be assured of a friendly welcome and a cuppa!

A CHRISTIAN COMMENT "Wash one anothers feet"

This was Christ’s instruction to His disciples after He had washed their feet - one of His last acts with them before His crucifixion. "I have set you an example" He said. They had been arguing among themselves as to which of them was the greatest and Jesus knew how vital was the lesson in humble service if they were to be fitted to carry on His work. As we have just celebrated at Easter, Jesus was soon to "Humble Himself and be obedient unto death" in order to accomplish His mission to rescue a fallen world.

That the disciples did learn this lesson of humble caring is clear from the account in Acts chap 2 of life among the believers - "Every day the Lord added to those who were being saved". It is a lesson all Christians ever since have had to learn and put into practice if their witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be authentic and convincing and fruitful. Mother Teresa knew how to "wash the feet" of the poor of Calcutta in all humility. "I am just a little pencil in the hand of God" she declared.

In our world so dominated by self-interest and self-seeking there is an overwhelming obligation for Christians to be committed, as the Bible urges, "To wash one anothers feet" - "To look out for others’ interests, not just our own" - "To go the extra mile" - "To love our neighbour as ourself" - and so on. No task may be considered too menial. No one may be despised or shunned, for we are all God’s children for whom Christ died. Christians must be right in the field of play, not hovering on the touchline.

Jesus is indeed The Way, The Truth and The Life - John 14 - 6

SHIPTON'S MILLENNIUM PARTY

SATURDAY 8th JULY - 2.30PM

Planning for The Millennium Party is now well underway. This free village event is to take place on the Village Playing Field, and there will be something for everyone.

The backdrop to the afternoon is a street party-style picnic starting at 2,30pm complete with picnic tables, chairs and an ice cream van. All you need to bring is your food. Everyone will have a chance to guess the weight of the village's huge millennium cake.

Line dancing and barn dancing will take place for everyone to join in. There will be rounders and 5-a-side football matches, and children's races. The Junior Bellinger Players will perform a short play. Whilst all this is going on, the finals of the Tennis and Basketball competitions will take place on the Courts.

To round the afternoon off, the Millennium Cake will be cut, and prizes will be presented for all the competitions plus the Sports and Social Club's Snooker and Pool competitions.

So keep a note of the date and invite your family and friends to join in.

We are also looking for volunteers to get involved with setting up and cleaning up. If you are able to help us, please call Liz Barnetson (847985). We look forward to hearing from you.

TEST VALLEY MILLENNIUM RELAY

This event involves the transferring of a baton across the length and breadth of Test Valley by as many different groups, organisations and individuals as possible. The baton itself contains messages of goodwill from one community to another. The baton arrives in the village during the Parish Council Meeting on the evening of 5 June from Amport, this is the 23rd stage of its journey. The baton then passes on to Grateley during the evening of 6 June. The School, Brownies and the Bellinger Players will maintain the baton during the time it is in the village. Organisations and individuals are encouraged to write a short message of goodwill for inclusion in the baton before it moves on.

All contributions to Helen Batterby, Berrybank, Parkhouse Road by 20 May.

Wednesday and Thursday 7/8 June Millennium Exhibition in St Peter’s Church a grand village exhibition of skills. (See separate notice for details)

Saturday 10 June 1.30 - 4.30pm Fete Day on the Village Playing Field. The Fete will be opened by Sir George Young. We have a programme of events for the afternoon with many traditional stalls and a Fairground organ. Some of the main attractions include a Dog Show and Trigger the Train. We have secured again by popular demand the Chainsaw Wood Carver. There will be a mini-assault course arranged by the Army, dancing, jugglers and pony rides. Refreshment and a licensed bar will be available during the afternoon.

In the weeks prior to these events helpers will call on you with Lucky Number Programmes, which will be your entry in to the Fete. We shall be asking you for donations of bottles etc for the popular Bottle Stall and will be grateful if you have these ready when we call.

This year we only have a very small committee to arrange everything but we would be most grateful for any offers of help either before the event or on the day to set up and man stalls. Unless more volunteers come forward there will be many of the usual side-shows unmanned. The Fete Committee only ask for 25% of profits made on Fete day, the remaining 75% go into your own funds. The next Fete Committee Meeting has been fixed for Thursday 11 May at 8pm in the Viewing Room at the Village Centre, the subsequent meeting will be fixed then. These are open meetings to anyone who shows an interest. All village organisations are invited to send a representative and to run a stall or side show on the day - please consider doing this, even if you can only spare a few hours -WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Each year the money raised during Fete Week is distributed to worthwhile causes within the village. Applications for funds from villagers or village organisations are welcomed and will be given due consideration at an Open Wash-up Meeting which anyone can attend. Those wishing to apply for a donation from this year’s profits may do so in writing to the treasurer as soon as possible. We aim to put some money from this years profit to the Millennium Project Fund, with which we hope to provide seats around the village and new cast iron waste bins.

Shipton Bellinger Web Site

The web site for the Village, formally launched in January has already received over 160 visits or ‘hits’. For those that have visited the site we would like to thank you for your support.

The site is obviously still evolving and due to work commitments this has not happened as quickly as we would have liked. However, there have been a number of additions and updates and these are listed below:

Plans are well underway for the introduction of a further section to the site. The ‘Village Noticeboard’ will contain useful and practical information for the residents of the Village. There will be a page for useful phone numbers (local doctors, police, etc) as well as one for bus timetables for services through the Village and another page for train timetables from Grateley. We also intend to add some further old pictures of the Village. Our longer term aim is to update the Village history.

We would also like to ask you for your thoughts on the site, particularly as it has been created for the benefit of the people of the Village. What else would you like to see on it? Did you find it easy to use? What was of particular interest? Please let us know by e-mailing us at the address on the site.

Have your own pages! Why not use the site to promote your organisation with an entry on the clubs and societies page? You could also promote any events that you may be organising through the "What’s On" pages. You really don’t have to be a computer expert to create a page. Details are on the site or you could e-mail us, or even call us - we'd be happy to help and show you how to build your own pages! Over 160 people could have already seen your entry if it had been on the site since January….
